W2K Upgrade

By npgandhi ·
What will happen with all the different hardware driver? What will happen to NT 4.0 after W2K? I noticed in the past that always MS comes out with buggy OS in the first instance and then come out with patches and then comes the real OS in the form of Release 2, Do we need to wait until they come out with R2?

W2K Upgrade

I have found that most of my hardware drivers ARE supported during/after an upgrade to WIN2K. The few exceptions to that rule have been firmware upgrades (to RAID controllers and the like). As to what happens to NT4, this all depends upon whether you opt in your upgrade to copy the WIN2K OS files into the current WINNT directory or you opt to upgrade to a seperate directory all together. The only time I have opted to upgrade to a different directory, is to build a machine with multiple OS boot capabilities (which with WIN2k can get confusing when trying to remember WHERE you put WHAT). As to your hesitance with this, I understand. Although Microsoft has made some mighty leaps with this OS (and they have done quite a nice job on first iteration), you need to know that the "look and feel" is NOT the same. They have almost (and I say this loosely) had the need to dedicate an entire book on Networking and Network Engineering/Architecture with this OS. However, I don't want to scare you. This is quite a robust OS. I have been very pleased at the enhancements that have come with this OS.

I tried for an upgrade with WIN2K, but what I noticed that the SiS 6215 VGA Driver, Voyetra Driver for Modem, and even Samsung 4BNi Monitor was not recognized by WIN2K, and I needed Upgrade software of these HW's

But feel a great look, enhanced MS Console, IIS and so on..
