w98 cannot browse network in w2k domain

By FatUncleAL ·
I upgraded a PDC to a w2k DC. There are two other NT BDC running in the domain. It's running in mixed mode and the w2k DC is running active directory. Setup DNS and DHCP. The domain has a mix of w98 and w2k machines. All machines can logon to the domain now and able to browse the network. The w2k machines logon to "xyz.abcd.org" domain, no problem. The w98 machines logon to the pre w2k "xyz" domain with no problem and can see everybody else in Network Neighborhood. But when I switch the w98 machines to logon to "xyz.abcd.org" , it'll logon and get all the drive mapping and get the right IP, but can not browse or see other computers in Network Neighborhood. Why ? How to solve this? Please help.
Thanks.

Have you tried renaming the 98 client machines then joining the AD/2K qualified named domain? It could be due to an invalid entry in the AD for those computer names.

Please correct me when I'm wrong.

You are relying on the DHCP to give you the correct IP address whenever the W98 machine log-on to the domain.

So, in domain xyz.abcd.org you will get different IP than when the W98 machine log-on to the xyz ?
I think your problem lies within the assigning the correct IP to the machine. You'll have to release the IP address first when you switch to other domain using the command line:

IPCONFIG cardname /RELEASE

Could you give the IP address of your servers and also IP address of your W98 machine when it log-on to the xyz.abcd.org and xyz.

You do not need to logon to your active directory from your 98 machines with the fqdn domain name. 98 will only see the domain through WINS not DNS therefore you should only be using the "PRE-WINDOWS2000" NETBIOS domain name "xyz" versus the fqdn "xyz.abcd.org". As for joining the domain, 98 machines don't create accounts in the directory so there is no need to worry there.
