W98 - do we need these exe's?

By Ian Boothby ·
I've worked with low-spec PCs and have always "turned everything off" except EXPLORER, however, I have been informed by colleagues that I should leave SYSTRAY & TASKMON running - but no-one can give me a reason why. What do they do, and should they (or anything else) be running - what are the consequences 'cos all my machines seem to have worked OK without them!

You would usually only have explorer and systray running because of explorer being the windows "shell", and systray is what displays the icons in the taskbar by the clock. As for taskmon this is only used for scheduling things such to run at different points and is not needed. You can get rid of systray if you don't need the icons. But explorer is definitely needed.

I agree with one. What they're telling you is an old wifes tale from when 95 first came out.

My rule of thumb has always been just to leave things open as if it booted up from a fresh install...without things like an antivirus program running or a real place quicklaunch in there.
