W98 Files won't open

By ldtaylor ·
HELP function disappeared. Can't open MK@MSITStore C:\windows\help\windows.chm Tried reinstalling WIN98 but no change. NEW printer wouldn't test print or function, but runs on another computer with W98. Message: Can't open MS-its:tshoot98.chm/win98print-result.htm
Without wiping out hard drives, can this be corrected.

First try re-installing Internet Explorer. All these functions require IE. Install the latest version you have. If you have the repair disk, use that (one often comes with the PC). Otherwise, download a copy to CD if you have that available (from another computer) or grab one of the free CD copies in magazines (Borders books has tons of computer mags that have Netscape and IE on the CD that comes with the magazine) if you don't. It'll never fit on a floppy and I assume you can't use the internet to do it natively.
If that doesn't work, run a virus checker and see if you're infected.

No virus; IE would simply not install. Ended up wiping out the drive and all works well now.

I was trying to avoid that. I knew enough to it if all else failed.

If you can access the internet, you might try going to support.microsoft.com and search for information on Help Update. At one time there was an update that installed all the necessary functions for the newer .chm compressed help files and it's functions.
Also (re)installing the DCOM components might also repairs this.
Again, if you can access the internet, you could try the Windows Update link in the start menu and let it scan the system and install critical updates and then other items listed, especially related to help functions.
If you pc won't access that site, or you get errors when doing so, you will need to run regedit. NOTE: Running regedit can cause system failure if you are not familiar with its use and don't take the properprecautions, such as backing up the registry prior to making any changes! Search for the key "RegDone" (should be under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/) and change its value to "1". This will allow you to use the online update siteto scan your system.

I'd suggest you try all three. If that doesn't work try one and two instead. Reinstall Windows 98 on your system, and update your software. Instead of reinstalling the version of Internet Explorer you have you might want to update it to the latest version if you still have Internet Explorer 5.5 or 5.0. If it still doesn't work try contacting Microsoft for support. If you get no answer just upgrade to the latest version of their operating system or change to another operating system like Mac OS X or Unix etc.

I started out looking for a way to avoid reinstalltion. Even reinstalled Windows without cleaning rest of drive. No luck. Completely reformatted my drive and allw as well. No virus, if Norton's was correct.
