WAB / Outlook Express 5

By sKIz ·
Hi,

I have a buddy that has a messed up Windows Address Book. She can't open Outlook Express. The WAB is listed in:
START > PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES > ADDRESS BOOK.

this gives a wab32.dll error. I have tried to uninstall the WAB("c:\Program Files\Outlook Express\setup50.exe" /APP:WAB /UNINSTALL). While this did remove the address book from the system. OE5 was stil not able to open. I then went and uninstalled IE5 and had it restore IE4 and OE4 and OE4 did not want to work yet either. I then went and grabbed IE5.5 and did a custom and reinstalled everything. This failed as well. IE5 runs and is fine the WAB was reinstalled but is still messed up and OE5 will not open.

Help?!

Open windows explorer.
Goto windows\application data.
Rename the identities folder to identity.
Rename the Microsoft folder to Microsoar(Do a find for *.wab to make sure where the .wab file is. If the file is program files\outlook express, then rename the outlook express folder instead and in the end rename it back like the microsoft would have been). Close Windows explorer.
Click on start/run.
Type regedit and click ok.
Click the plus on HKEY_CURRENT_USER\identities.
Highlight the subkey of identities, click on registry, choose export registry file, save to desktop as id1, and clcik ok.
Do this for each subkey of identities (id1,id2,id3,etc...).
Delete the identities key after the above is performed.Close registry editor.
Uninstall OE5, restart the system, and reinstall OE5.
Open registry editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\identities(Click the plus next to identities).
Delete the subkey of Idenntities.
Close registry, then bring up windows explorer.
Goto windo

Continued....

Open windows explorer.
Goto windows\application data.
Delete the new identities folder,
Rename the identity folder back to identities.
If you renamed the Microsoft folder to microsoar, then delete the new microsoft folder and rename microsoar to microsoft.
If you renamed the Outlook Express folder under c:\program files, then delete the new Outlook express folder(if it exist) and rename the old folder back to outlook express.
Close windows explorer.
Double click the registry keys we exported to the desktop.
This will enter them back into the registry.
Restart the system, then launch OE5.5 after the restart.

Thanks for the answer on this one.. I never have seen this happen before and the microsoft knowledgebase was useless. I went over and fixed her up.
