Want opinions about databases

By pappy1271 ·
I have been using Access for 6 years now. I have created a number of small applications that are used by small work groups. I want to get more into the large scale databases that serve web sites or businesses with web front ends. The problem is I do not know where to begin. With Access all was built right in together, usually I will split the database in two (Frontend, backend) but with highend databases there are sooooo many choices. So somebody point me in the right direction. Oh yeah, I have also used Visual Basic 6.0, not that it matters, but just more info.
Thanks,

Start with database servers starting with M

by andy In reply to Want opinions about datab ...

Just a suggestion: try a free download or two of a database server that scales very easily all the way to very large, and that has lots of available documentation, including a ton of books, to help you learn quickly.

Both my suggestions start with the letter M: MySQL, open source, the default database installed by thousands of Apache-based webhosting companies around the world. And MS-SQL, free to try though not free to apply (you can download a free personal development version called MSDE, but to deploy commercially you must pay Microsoft its not insignificant fee). Very powerful database widely used in Microsoft web hosting situations. Scripting languages like PHP will access both of these engines (PHP will also access Access, and even Oracle and a whole bunch of others too. So will ASP.Net, which might be another step for you to take). Good luck.

Start with Oracle 9iAS

I don`t know your expertise, but with the experience we have with a Oracle Database and
the Oracle 9iAS Application Server, it is a good place to start, and for you to recognize your VB experience.

Opinions About Databases

For starters, take a look at MySQL on http://www.mysql.org. Downloads are available for most operating systems currently in business use, and the documentation is excellent. Consider adding Java Servlets and JSP to your software development tool kit.

This may help to decide on databases

by csjcgd In reply to Opinions About Databases

First of all, my apologizes if my english is not so fluent.

I have been developing with VisualFoxpro so i got my bias.

On the type of database that you will prefer, it relies on how much time do you have to evaluate, the most time you should be investing is in a modeler like CA Allfusion Erwin or Xcase, because this products let you model your data, first prove if it works in access, that is the one you are most familiar with, then import your databases to the model, verify your asumptions and modify the model with the necesary adjustmnets, and then export them to the database of your desire.

My personal favorites are MySql and MsSQL, both work fine with VisualFoxpro, and with VB6, a note of caution with MySql is that if you need transactions and referencial integrity you should use the 4.0.2 and above, with the InnoDB type of databases, and get the MySql ODBC version 3.4 or higher.

On the other hand i dislike Oracle, Informix, Db2 because of the problems i had with them.
