I would strongly recommend talking with my x-business partner Mark Hargraves. He builds web and apps servers for large web corperations. His E-mail is

A Web Server is a program that responds to incoming requests by sending back web pages, often incorporating scripts that interact with the user. An Application Server runs application programs on the server, with only user interaction (keystrokes, database info, screen display data, etc.) being sent over the network. An App server shifts the bulk of the processing load to the server, but reduces the network traffic. Check trade mags such as InfoWorld, Network magazine, etc, for some excellent articles about both types of server. Some of the various certification training manuals are good resources, as well. Spend a day browsing in the book store!
