what are some ways of fixing inconsistent internet issues

By Snuffy09 ·
Im working on a home built PC running windows XP Home Sp3. It is connected to a DSL modem. the internet works great for the first 5 to 10 mins then it starts saying that the page cannot be displayed. if you do an IP /release then /renew it doesnt help. you have to cycle the power on the modem. then the internet will work again for 5 to 10 mins. One of the odd things is that when the internet wont work the INTRANET will, if connected through a hub i can connect to other computers on my lan but not the internet.

I ran several AV / Malware scans and found nothing. I also ran a winsock fix tool. my system works fine on the same modem so i dont think their is a problem with the modem.

Anybody had this problem before?
or
Any ideas?

Thank You!

If you need to cycle power on the modem

to get it working again, likely there is an issue with the DSL modem and or power to your place.
You can try a UPS to correct power issues, but most likely, the modem needs a firmware upgrade, or to be replaced

My MTS internet did that

You could gradually watch the bandwidth disappear, I would start a download after restarting modem, and you could watch it fall from 200kbps down to 2 bytes per second and lower till it eventually just stopped. But It's your ISP's fault. Check with them. In my case they couldn't fix it, so I switched to shaw cable. Much faster, I now download at 4mbytes per second and it costs the same as DSL. ($60 a month)

Still, call your ISP

They can monitor your traffic and maybe see what is going on. Their tech guys are usually trained more in fixing your computer, than fixing their own crap anyways.
