What are the best sizes for filesystems

By strachsel ·
When partitioning and formatting a large drive to work with Windows and Linux(dual boot), what are the best sizes for access efficiency, and not wasting too much space by have too large of a cluster size? Also is their a big different between fat-32, and ntfs on this issue? Assuming a 40GB harddrive, how would you partition it?

What are the best sizes for filesystems

There are many parameters you left out of your question. Mainly, what are you going to do with this computer. What programs are you going to load. What version of windows? With out knowing your requirements, I would divide the hard drive in 20 gig partitions. But you may have many window programs and that partition would need to be bigger??? There is a program "partition magic" that will allow you to change partition sizes without destroying you data. Might be worth a look into? Partition Magicalso allows you to adjust the cluster sizing. As far as fat32 vs ntfs (win nt and 2000) I would always go ntfs, for the security features.
Hope this was of some help.

Answer did not address cluster size changes based on filesystem size, and recommended a solution incompatible with dual boot linux.

The size of each partition will depend on your individual situation.

See this article on making that determination:
