what's difference between erp and eai

by Rob Wolfe In reply to what's difference between ...

ERP is definitely not dead (we should all be so lucky). and EAI is definitely not a replacement for it.

A really good short read (a couple screenfuls) is available at

http://www.computeruser.com/articles/daily/7,2,1,0822,00.html

in a nutshell ERP involves doing a complete "rewrite" of a company's business processes and systems (hence the quotes) and usually involves trying to do it with software from one vendor ie SAP, Oracle ...

EAI is more concerned with making your existing processes , and any new ones, and maybe even those of your business partners all talk together, share information and generally play nice.

Both of these tasks are HUGE undertakings but one of the reasons that you may be seeing more EAI talk going on is that it sounds (to the implementor) more like it is possible to do a bit at a time. Plus people are scared to death when they see what the total implementation bill is on a full fledged ERP "system".

Hope this helped a bit
