When the Activate Windows Alert Won't Let You In

By comp1systems ·
The strangest thing! A friend of mine has a laptop. He's
using WinXP. He activated Windows as requested by the
Activate Windows alert. However, he keeps getting the
message, and now he's not able to get into his computer.
He can't get pass the "Welcome" screen. Now, I have never
heard of such a thing.

I heard people who had Compaq laptops experienced the
most trouble with them than people who had Toshiba or
Gateway laptops. I want to tell him how to fix it, but can't
really pinpoint whether or not it's a matter of repairing or if
it's something entirely different.

It's not amazing to think that laptops will experience
similar problems that a PC will experience. I just realized
that you can't treat a laptop like a PC when repairing
problems. I knew someone who wondered why he kept
having problems with his laptop versus his PC. He fixed a
"laptop-related" problem as if it were a PC and ran into a
whole lot of problems. It was a lesson learned, and with
some adjustments, the laptop ended up running fine.

But if someone has suggestions as to how you can fix an
"Activate Windows Alert" problem...I'd sure like to know.
He was told, which I wouldn't recommend, to reinstall the
operating system. I'm sure there's a different route he
could take like repairing Windows using the Repair
functions in the installation CD. I'm open to suggestions.

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in "Technical Q&A," not in "Discussions." Please re-post there.

Not only will you be more likely to attract the attention of those seeking to provide answers, but you will also make it easier for those seeking discussions to find such.

Thank you.
