Where did my CDRom go?

By glocker21 ·
I went to load a office program but my CDRom seems to have disappeared. Damned annoying. It is a new Creative 52x CDRom. I am stumped.

Check the cables for loose connections. Check the status thru device manager. Reinstall the laterst driver for your device.

I'd reboot before I'd re-install the drivers. If the reboot doesn't fix it then I'd do the re-install. You need to be more specific when asking questions though. What kind of O/S are you using? Win 95 is notorious for loosing device drivers and ME is bad with memory leaks. Nt is bad about reconizing hardware. Where you doing anything like installing other programs or hardware before the CD-ROM quit? Did power go out unexpectantly? Was the computer droped? I'd also check device manager in95/98/ME/2000 for device conflicts. This should be enough to get you started.

If you have windows ME you could go to start then to help then to troubleshooting then to system restore...and pick a restore date of say a few days before you noticed this problem, or if you have windows 98 you could go to start then to run then type in sfc in the run box...make sure you have your windows cd handy in case it finds damaged files. If we knew the version of windows you were running it would make it a little easier. Does computer recognize the cd rom in bios/cmos at all?

Ok did you add any devices like an external tape drive or install any new software? If so remove them and reboot, is the cdrom back? What you installed may use the IRQ your cdrom uses. If your O/S uses the config.sys or autoexc.bat you need to add to the config last drive=z so it will see devices after d: or e:.

Also try removing the cable from the cdrom and using the second connection from the hard drive for the cdrom. As the computer boots up go into setup to see if the computer see's the cdrom. If it does then it's a software problem.

Go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computor .

Select , Command prompt only .

After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

This article describes how to restore a backup copy of the Windows 98
or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) registry

scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .
