Why Access 2K crash formatting report?

By Phil-Columbia MD ·
I have a report in Access 2000 (SR-1) involving one sub-report. Under Windows 98 the report formats and displays fine. But in NT or Windows 2000 the same report crashes while formatting. (Other reports in the same .mdb, some seemingly more complex, run fien on either O.S.)

Why and, more to the point, what can be done to allow it to format and display?

It's difficult to say without knowing the details but I would SUSPECT one or more of the libraries you need are not loaded???

It would be helpful if the answer suggested which libraries or types of libraries might be implicated.

I imagine the reason the previous poster didn't tell you wich libraries would be implicated is because its entirely dependant on the objects and add-ons that the report uses. (which we have no way of knowing given your original post)

Something else that would help people greatly in your post is if you told us what error, if any you are receiving when you try to run the report. What exactly does 'report crashes' mean??

Try this:

Open the database on one of the operating systems you arehaving difficulty with. Click on the report that doesn't run in order to highlight it. Click on the design button to get it into design mode. You need to get into the code of the report in order to see what the references are within the database (MS at its best). This part is also entirely dependant on how the report was written. If you don't know how to get to any of your code, let me know.

Once you are looking at the code window go up to your Tools menu and click references. You should see a list of checked and unchecked items. If you have a problem with your references you are likely to see a checked item that says the object name and then not found in parenthesis (or something like that --I believe that's how Access97 does it-- I haven't had this problem in Access2000 yet to see exactly how it handles it) If it says something is missing... then there is your problem.

Why Access 2K crash formatting report?

I seldom have your same problem and I discovered that it is caused by the libraries. When a format instruction doesn't work it is due to the COMCTL32.OCX library or sometimes to the COMDLG32.OCX library. First of all check if these libraries are registered in your NT (otherwise register them manually using "REGSVR32 libname.ocx" in a DOS shell). Their version number is very important, too. In fact recent versions are not compatible with previous versions of the same library, so you have to install the same libraries with the same version number of your develop PC (find the file, right click, Property, version). You can copy the files from your PC and replace them in NT. It should work.
