Look in Drive Management

And see what is listed there. It's possible that if you use a lot of USB Thumb Drives you have prevented the DVD from showing.

If there is nothing in the Drive Management look in Device Manager and see what is showing there for the DVD Drive.

The DVD Drive in my Dell laptop does not show in my computer window. Why?

by tsos In reply to Why does my DVD Drive not ...

The DVD-RW Drive in my Dell Latitude running Windows XP does not show up in the my computer window. When I insert a bootable disk into the drive and restart the laptop it boots up from the drive. On normal boot up the DVD drive doen not show up in the my computer window so I cannot run any program from the CD or DVD.

Doesn't really matter you still need to look in Drive Management

Which in XP can be found here

Start, Control Panel, Classic View, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Drive Management.

Look there to see if the Optical Drive appears. If it doesn't then go to Device Manager which is in the left pane above Drive Management and look there for appears in DVD/CD Drives.
