Why does my modem have no Interupt?

By joemcal ·
I bought a new computer, and it is imposible to get their tech support. I review the Diagnostics More Info and it passed, but does not have an interupt assigned to COM1. COM3 has an interupt, but no modem. Looking at my modem, it is setup to use COM1. How do I reconcile this in Win Me?

MYCOMPUTER/CONTROLPANEL/SYSTEM/DEVICEMANAGER and double click modem and click on resource that where it tell you about what irq and io the modem is using. If the modem is working fine the way it was setup, I would leave it alone. To change it, remove the modem driver and turn pc off and remove the modem card. Turn pc back on without modem and check to make sure You have com1(IRQ-4/IO-3F8) and com2 (IRQ-3/IO-2F8) in the device manager. Now turn pc off and install the modem card and its driver. Good luck.

com1 and com3 uses the same irq (4)...if the diagnostic assigns an irq to the modem then windows would show you a conflict...
look at the device manager if the modem have an irq...
or you can look in the bios resume, before loading windows something like :

"pci comm device #" (where # is the irq assigned)...
the bios does not lie...windows...sometimes

An old trick I learned some time ago was when the modem was not being recognized by windows is to right click on "My Computer", select "Properties" and then "Device Manager". Remove all com ports and then remove the modem as well. Reboot and see if Windows finds all devices at boot up. Hope this helps.

Your question doesn't mention whether the modem works or not. If it's a PCI modem, it may have no assigned IRQs, as PCI devices share resources. If it's working, leave well enough alone...

If it's not, the best bet is to remove it, shut down and physically remove it, then reboot. Shut down again, reinstall it, then reboot and let Plug & Play work it's magic.
