Why does “My Workspace” 404 out so often?

Locked

by jdclyde ·

For the last few weeks I have noticed that when trying to follow the “My Workspace” link, it will generally give a 404 error?

That, and the “My Updates” work about 1 out of 10 times.

I can follow any other links just fine.

Is this a known issue?

Doug hasn’t been reading his email…

I’ve been having this problem for months now. I rarely get to My Workspace in a single attempt. I usually have to refresh two or more times before I see it. Usually, though, once I’m in, I don’t have any trouble with the Updates.

This has been an on-going issue for months.

I typically access TR using a shortcut that is pointed to My Workspace.
Invariably, it doesn’t open and so I click on Forums. After that page opens I can then click on My Workspace via the link in the upper right and it opens fine. What’s up wit dat?

I guess it’s a hassle I’ve sadly just come to expect.

Unfortunately the frequency seems to be increasing.

I have FireFox but call me a Die-hard.
I use IE cause it makes it easier to access my FTP site and use my on-line radio station. Plus I have all the plug-ins just the way I like ’em.

I’ll concede that most of the 404’s are due to maintenance, but I seem to get a lot of ‘Page Cannot Be Displayed’ type messages when I try to go straight to My Workspace page.

But Die-hard that I am, I’ll hold out thinking that Sonja and the gang will eventually get it rectified.

Firefox seamlessly imports all your Favorites and settings

You have all your accustomed functionality, and can even configure the toolbar(s) to resemble IE.

You don’t have to uninstall IE – Firefox sits harmlessly on the hard drive and doesn’t cause any corruption to IE when you open Firefox. The two have an agreed armistice.

So go ahead and try it. You’ll be most favorably impressed.

Again… thanks, but as I mentioned, I have Firefox. I’ve used it for years. I just still prefer IE for my everyday use. Need I define ‘Die-Hard’ any more? It’s the same reason I don’t use da Penguin. 😀

However… your advice, as usual, is sound.

What do you think about FF and the memory usage?

In reply to What do you think about FF and the memory usage?

Before your post, I didn’t think of checking. Holy cow! 100MB of RAM!

My Sony desktop has 2GB of RAM installed, a 65-nm Intel dual core 3.2GHz processor, and I just installed the new Western Digital VelociRaptor HD (10,000rpm, 16MB cache, 3 gigabits/sec transfer rate).

So Firefox v.3 doesn’t affect performance with this hardware, but I suspect it may adversely affect performance with older machines.

I cannot compare the RAM usage with prior versions, because I never thought to check. All this said, I stand by my suggestion to the Pirate that you test it and compare overall performance to IE.

Captain Billy and I are alike in our conservative dispositions. I keep my old Jeeps running, and have absolutely no intention of replacing them. They’re paid for, cheap to insure, and go everywhere.

But you don’t have to give up anything by trying the new Firefox v. 3 – just park it on the hard drive and open it when you wish. It won’t launch on its own, so you have nothing to lose.

In reply to It’s a ravenous beast, the offspring of T. Rex

because I have to support many older systems at work. I would say we have probably about 20 pc’s that are pIII 600 or less. I have been pushing for a minimum of 512m ram, but don’t always get it, so some are at 256m. All run xpsp2.

memory footprint is very critical to me. 🙁

I can’t wait for these systems to die. 😀

Apart from the “Empowering Technology” from Acer, after jd tipped me off, I looked at FF. I uninstalled, opted for Opera instead, and found I had a zoomy and working machine!

Spec for the lappie is on the link – even though it’s ex demo, it’s still not “old” – well, not in my eyes, I’m still like a new mum with a baby!!

I go back and forth

by jdclyde ·

In reply to It’s not just older systems…..

because there are more sites that don’t work with Opera than what works with FF.

So, I use Opera until it doesn’t work.

I then use FF until it doesn’t work.

then I decide if I really need what is at the site, and if the answer is yes, then and only then do I fire up IE.

I see “server maintenance” every third time I log in. I know the writers can do better than this. Must be a budget decision.

usually the server maintenance message (for me) pops up a few times on one or 2 days in a week.

404’ed for me, too

In reply to Why does “My Workspace” 404 out so often?

I’ve opened a bug for the development team to look at this.

For active users, that page has a lot of data to look up. That’s my guess for the cause of the problem and why it works on subsequent requests (because the data are cached).

Cheers,
Doug

Not entirely so

In reply to 404’ed for me, too

When it first started happening I cleaned out my profile(s) pretty well. I have since spent a lot of time keeping them clean (usually).
Unless it is caching all of my posts as well?? In that case, I can wait until I click the ‘My Forum Posts’ link, so that part can go away 🙂

Thanks for the info!
