Why is NetMeeting giving me a hard time?

By apostolosk ·
I have been a fan of Microsoft NetMeeting for quite a number of years. And now that it has the Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS), I think it is a great tool. However, I have never gotten the RDS function to work properly. I would like to tell you about my most recent experience, and maybe you can help me:

I live outside of Atlantic City, New Jersey. My father lives in Northern New Jersey, across the river from New York. He was having a problem with his PC and he called me. I had already sent him the NetMeeting .exe file and helped him install it several days before, so I was ready to put it to the test.

Bear in mind, now, that we are BOTH on dial-up Internet connections. He only has one phone line in the house, so we were communicating through AOL's Instant Messenger program. I told him how to get his IP address, we set him up for RDS, and I was ready to "call" his PC. Well, I put in his IP address, but nothing happened. It said it was calling his IP number, but it never connected. I worked with him until 2:00 a.m. trying to get NetMeeting to connect to his desktop. I went out to Microsoft's web site, pulled up the tutorial, and followed EXACTLY the instructions. I even went out to OTHER web sites which had specific instructions on doing this, and made sure I was doing exactly what they said. But, I never connected with my father.

My question is, WHY? Am I missing a piece of the puzzle? Is there any way I can get someone either from Tech Republic or ANYWHERE, to help me test this out? I am under the assumption that this should work using dial-up connections. I am not on a LAN, and neither is my father. So, what am I doing wrong???

Please help.... I may have screwed up with my dad, but I can't afford to screw up with a potential client!

Okay. I can help. I have worked extensively with NetMeeting on and off the LAN. Email me at apratt@bellatlantic.net or contact me at gpurple713. That is my AIM name (no email on that account).

An even better tool than Net Metting for desktop control is VNC. You can find it at:
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10101-100-2466323.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.2466323

If the link doesn't work, go to downloads.com and type VNC in the search box and download the first selection which is called "Virtual Network Computing".

Good luck.

hi!!

I am not very expert in Netmeeting, But I have used it and I also have faced some problems as you had mentioned.

Try configuring the RDS once more. then go fo options...Tools> Options > Security > and select only > outgoing calls....I prefer to make secure outgoing calls only...

It should work.

have a good day.
