Why no Download Buttons?

By canopic@clear ·
Does anyone else have this problem? I can click on the links I receive by email from TR, and Firefox takes me to the page advertising and describing the article. Most articles are offered as PDF files to download. On my screen there is NO PROVISION to download these articles - no DOWNLOAD BUTTON or other link that would fetch the article. Why? It just seems so crazy - its driving me nuts! I can click on all the other links and they all work fine, just no download links. I have filed problem reports with TR for 3 months now, but I don't think they believe me. They haven't fixed anything and haven't suggested what I can adjust on my WinXP system. There are many good articles I want to access but I can't. Before 3 months ago I had no problem fetching these articles. The only [Weird] connection I can make with this problem is that 3 months ago I also upgrades to IE7 [from IE6] My IE7 doesn't work properly - It works fine on https sites, but not at all on http sites. However I am using Firefox for everything and I have no problems with Firefox.
Is this a TR problem or is it only my computer? Any suggestion? I have contacted MS technical support about IE7 but so far they seem to have no idea how to help me make IE7 work properly.

Article Downloads

by TheChas In reply to Why no Download Buttons?

I'm using both Firefox and IE7 on Windows XP with Adobe Reader 8. I do have sporadic problems with TR downloads but not to the level that you are seeing.

Let's walk through an article and see what is happening for you.

This one was in last weeks emails.

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035-6157505.html?tag=nl.e071

I then click on the embedded link in the words PDF Download, and it takes me here:

http://downloads.techrepublic.com.com/abstract.aspx?docid=281641

Click on the download button, and the PDF opens up in a new tab.

http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tr/downloads/home/10_things_network_slow.pdf

Where does the trail break for you?

You can also get to downloads from the Downloads link at the top of most TR pages.

No Download Button at all

by acey80 In reply to Article Downloads

When I open the site:
http://downloads.techrepublic.com.com/abstract.aspx?docid=281641

I can see the download button, and I clicked it which takes me here:
http://downloads.techrepublic.com.com/thankyou.aspx?&docid=281641&view=281641&load=1

and there's NO download button!
I just see a big size of:
"10 tips for troubleshooting slowdowns in small business networks" with no button whatsoever...
How come??

Thanks for your reply...

IE problem with Techrepublic??? Firefox as well?

by acey80 In reply to Why no Download Buttons?

Hi Canopic,

The same here. there's no download button (even when I've already Log-In) when i'm using IE6 or IE7. I've already enabled the popup blocker as well.

I used firefox 2.0 before to download those papers. But now, suddenly I just can't find the download button like I used to...
Somebody out there please help!
I check the Firefox's "Error Console" and I found this error among the others:
"Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to call method Location.toString"

Is there anything like add-on, Java script, activeX, etc that I've forgotten to install or accidentally uninstalled, deleted, some settings changed, etc etc???

Please help.
Thanks...
