Why Rename a File

By LeisureMan ·
Context:
In our class we normally give two reasons we should change file names (we are talking mainly about files made using Microsoft Office Word or Excel):
1) To make it clearer what a file contains (like not Letter.doc, but LetSuplMar2004.doc)m
2) Making it possible to sort them better (like ListDept001.doc, ListDept002.doc, etc).

Question?
Are there other good reasons for renaming that we should mention teaching beginners?

Thank everyone in advance.

letter to supplier July 29 2005.doc
inventory list for ______ department july 2005.doc

you don't need the encrypted shorthand, the 8.3 limitation is gone.

name any file for easy indexing, so that the name indicates it's contents. this is a good practice as it saves hours of searching through files to find the one you want.

if you include the date in the name then archiving and finding it agains is much easier.
