Why won't my PC see all of my drive?

By bigfarfel ·
I am setting up a Windows 2000 Advanced Server PC with a 300GB IDE drive. The OS only sees 137 of the 300 gigs. The BIOS recognizes the entire drive and we're using an 80 pin cable that came wiht the drive. I tried booting to a Windows 2003 Server disk and it seems the whole drive is recognized there as well. We're scratching our heads here. Any ideas? I can't find anything relevant in the MS knowledge base, but then, I rarely do. Even Google is a bust.

There's still a 137 GB storage limit barrier with some systems. Depending on the drive's manufacturer, there are programs that you can run to overcome this limit. Maxtor, for example, has a "big drive enabler" executable that will fix the problem.

Check with the manufacturer of your drive (their Web site), and they'll probably have the same thing.

I use Maxtor drives, and have used their big-drive program many times. It works fine. However, I've not tried it with another drive's manufacturer, but it'll probably work on any drive.

Looks like Seagate has a utility for this and it worked like a charm. It was easy to find, easy to use, and made the appropriate changes in under 30 seconds. Thanks.

If memory serves me well, you need at least Service Pack 3 of Windows 2000 to get past the 137GB barrier.

(For Windows XP, you need SP1 or latter.)

Assuming your install CD is SP2 or older, your best option would be to create a "slip-stream" CD with SP3 or SP4 on it.

That way, you would be able to install with full support for your large hard drive.

Here is a link to a MS Knowledge Base Article on slip streaming drivers:

Chas is correct. Here's a MS article that explains things in more detail.

I recommend that you Do Not use drive manufacturer's large disk support utility. It will modify boot sector and quite likely cause problems with a server OS.

Maxtor put it on the outside of the box !

Drives larger than 137GB require Windows 2000 SP3 or higher, XP SP1 or higher, or ATA/133 PCI card.

Verbatum from the side of the box !

I'm not using Maxtor and my drive did not come in a box.
