why do some say that win os's 95/98/nt will be phased out within the next few years and that unix would be the superior os.
frankly i do not see anything special about linux!!!

The reason why unix is gaining popularity, especially in the business world, is it's stability. The UNIX OS can run for years without problems. Also,it is a more secure OS than Windows, making it tough for hackers to infiltrate the system.
Anyone who hasused Windows for any amount of time will know that it is very problamatic and prone to crashes.

i haven't worked too much with linux/unix, but i know the little bit i have worked with it, it wasn't very hard to come to the conclusion that it's difficult to navigate through. let's say that unix is more secure and more stable...unix at it's present sate could only be a good solution at the server end. as far as clients using this on a day-to-day basis, that would be even more of a tragedy than the problems people have with windows. unix is very unfriendly to the average user in my opinion. it's al about opinions and what you're comfortable working with. my take, i hope unix does gain market share, i hope microsoft continues to hold market share, and that both os's will be prevelant in the business world. they can only compliment one another. ifunix becomes the superior os, then we're at point a again (yes i'm talking about the microsoft controvesy of monopolizing the computer industry). if unix is given the foothold of superiority, it too will do the same practices everyone complains about wit

One of the most attractive aspects of Linux that I've found is that it's Open Source, meaning it's not controlled by one company, but many people from around the world have contributed to it's source code. One of the benefits to this is that when a bug isfound, it can be corrected quickly. Add to this the fact that even features that work are constantly being "tuned" for better performance. Other's that have responded to your question also hit on good points; it's stable. It's not uncommon for a Linux serer to run for months on end without the need to reboot.

I've only been running linux for about 6 months now. No, a linux system is not the easiest of things to get going if your comming from a windows world. I have had to learn quite alot about how linux/unix works. What I do have though, is a PC that boots an runs faster and is configured the way I want it configured, not the way windows wants to configure it.
There are things to be improved in linux before 'Billy Bob new computer user' can hit the road running like he could if he had a windows system, but the rate that linux is developing, it will not be long before linux is just as easy.
You also do not have to shell out $90 dollars to try and see if you like it or not; linux can be downloaded free. Granted I have paid for mine, but what I would pay forone copy of windows, I have four different varients of linux and now have a preference for a specific distribution that suite me, that I like.

Either Windows or Linux is the best OS. It all depends on what you are going to use it for and how experienced the user is.
Windows is a suitable OS for "first time" computer owners because it's easy to use and there are lots of programs and other stuff.
Linux (or any other UNIX OS) Is more suitable for more advanced stuff.
Most computers with a UNIX OS running on them is used as servers just because of it's stability and good multitasking. Not for that they are easy to use. Shure many peopleuse Linuxt home, but you need to regard that you dont have any real support for the OS, and how should that be if someone that have never used a computer before sits down at a Linux machine and cant use it just because he dont have access to any support?.
There yu have it, you cant just say that ONE operating system is better than another. One OS is better than another depending on what you are going to use it for.
