Win 2000 in NT 4.0 environment

By drobertsoits ·
Can an NT 4.0 domain member server be upgraded to Windows 2000 as a member server in the domain it was previously in as an NT 4.0 member server without any problems?

In principle yes (I'm not aware of any problems, but there might be some). Personally, I've always tried to do a clean install of Windowss 2000 to get the best out of it, but upgrading is fully supported by Microsoft.

In most cases this isn't a problem, and you will enjoy the reliability improvements W2K brings, however in the case of many Compaq servers you will need to obtain the utility from Compaq that removes the NT 4.0 specific drivers, prior to loading W2K. There is an article posted on the Compaq site regarding this utility.
In my workplace we have loaded W2K on Gateway clones and have enjoyed the reliabilty improvements, up to 180 days w/o reboot, when finally did take it down for service patches/updates.

Yes works like a charm. We have upgraded probably 10+ servers this way with no problems. I agree with one of the previous answers that states "it is nice to start with a clean fresh install" but sometimes that isn't feasible. Good luck.
