    Win 2k Messenger Service

    Locked

    by tlawrence47 ·

I keep getting these annoying popup boxes on my desktop. They appear to come out of nowhere. I was told by my Sys Admin. that Win2k messenger should be disabled. Was he telling the truth or just having me on?

There is a company out there that is selling software that allows you to use the windows messaging system for spam. It has been affecting anyone with a live IP address on the net. Disabling the messaging service is one option, I do believe having a router on the network between the internet and the lan is another deterent. I am sorry I can’t offer too much more info yet, this is still a rather new nuisance and not much help on it yet.

Disable IM if you do not want to use it (it eats resources when on, even if not used):

      1) Right-click on the icon in the taskbar
      2) Left-click on Open
      #) Tools
      4) Options
      5) Preferences
      6) Uncheck “Run this program when windows starts”
      7) Uncheck “Allow this program to run in the background”
      8) Click on OK
      9) File
      10) Close

      He wasn’t kidding. Open Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
Find Messenger, doulble click on Startup Type and set it to Manual or Disabled. Double click on Status to stop it.

What you are seeing has nothing to do with MS Messenger which some have purported. The problem is with the MS messenger service (a service not an app). Disabling MS Messenger will NOT resolve your problem. Disabling the messenger service will (as one person pointed out). The messenger service is an administrative network service on a network to notify users of something important (like a server going down). I’ve used it myself many times.

Here’s an article that came out a couple of weeks agowhen this all started to appear:
