Win 95/98 Client Login

By paulirvine ·
Our Network consists of 33 users (32 standard PC's and 1 COMPAQ T1010 WBT), 3 servers, 1 being the PDC (Winnt 4 Server, the other 2 being W2K standard servers).

After returning post-weekend to find that 3 users cannot login to the Windows Domain.

Event log shows that one of the computers (Win95) had assumed the role of Master browser on the network after an election had been forced to take place.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to rectify.

Thanks,

the master browser has nothing to do with logging in to the nt server. the browser is used for mapping drives, printers, etc and network neigborhood listing. any pc can become a master browser. but the browser business does not even work right when it does work. one should disable the master browser setting in network properties anyway of all pcs you dont want to be a browser, which should be for all non-nt server in my opinion. that setting is under file/print sharing in network properties, if installed.

saying that, i would check those users pcs to see if the pcs can "See" the pdc and vice versa. try pinging each other using ip address and then name. if so, have someone else try to log in on those servers. check the network properties on those pcs to see if they are set properly for your network. if pinging by ip works and not name, it could be dns setting.
