Win 95 Log off Freeze

By grinstb ·
We are running an Nt 4.0 server with W95 clients and are having a problem with the shutdown option close allprograms and log on as a new user. When this field is selected the computer starts the log off process and then freezes and you are forced to do a hard reboot.

Any thoughts on the cause would be appreciated.

Shutdown will sometimes hang if you have an antivirus program running with an option set to check the floppy drive on shutdown. If you installed Norton AV and left the defaults, this is probably the problem.

By any chance are you running Norton Anti-Virus ? I had an identical problem and it turned out to be caused by Norton AV; I can't remember the exact cause or fix, but there was a document about it in the knowledge base on the Symantec website.

In addition to anti-virus programs, this sometimes happens if the NIC doesn't release cleanly - it happens most often with the 3Com 3C905 and 3C905B PCI cards. If you're using either of these cards, reinstall them with the newest set of drivers (available from the 3Com Internet site.); that has worked for me.

Are you getting any error messages when this occurs? Win95 has known bugs in the shut down process that they say where fixed in Win98 (if you believe that).
Usually this problem is due to open or TSR programs, try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and looking at what exactly is running in your systems background, as mentioned above Norton AV is know for causing this. A few other applications will do this to, generally it occurs when there is a conflict in memory between two or more applications. Try shutting down applications one at a time (using the end task feature after pressing ctrl + Alt + Delete) and logging on as a new user, once you successfully login you will know which Application is causing the problem and can take appropriate steps.

Good Luck
