Win 98 SE:Fatal exception error

I recently had a similar problem with a newer 866 flip chip and ASUS CUV4X motherboard with a Diamond Savage Pro AGP 4x video card. I was able to download a patch from the motherboard mfr for Win98SE to solve a lockup problem. The system would load Win98 just fine but once the installation was complete and the setup would install the video driver the next time the system started it would freeze up. I would check with your motherboard mfr and video card mfr to see if there are any bios upgrades or patches. Good luck.

dosen't look like a software problem. Try removing your hardware devices one by one, if the doesn't solve the problem it could be your memory or systemboard. IF it is a device causing the problem try updating drivers or replacing the device entirely.

Details related:

If your problem runs like this; then you are hopeless.
A Fatal Exception 0D has occurred at 0028:C0001FCE in VXD VMM(01) + 00000FCE.

According to Mircosoft; this is a known bug of windows 98 and they claim to have a fix for that; but no link or downloaded file is available.
If you can find one; please send me the info too. Because my computer is affected by it too.

I have run into this issue several times and have found a neet little utility for Win98 called vxd_fix that has fixed the VMM errors 90% of the time.

It seems that the installation of Win 98 does not copy all VXD's and thus results in in errorson startup. This utility and further documentation on the VXD issue can be found at:

http://www.windrivers.com/tech/tips/may99/

Once the utility is run in DOS mode, it will ask you to put in the correct version CD (98 or 98se)and will replaceand add the VXD's to your system.

Caution: Be sure to use the correct version CD with your system!!!!

Good luck!

In Windows 98/95, some devices from the newer chipsets mainboards cannot be correctly recognised and the drivers for these devices were not included too. Use patches from mainboard manufactur. Maybe you have via chipset go to http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/pci16w.zip
The "VIA Chipset Functions'Registry "
http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/580_2149.EXE
VIA Bus Master(Ultra DMA) PCI IDE Driver
