Win XP - drives mis-lettered

By lepricahnsgold ·
I had to reinstall Windows XP on my main drive & not the drive letters listed in XP are messed up. It has my primary master (where XP is installed) as drive E, my secondary master as drive C & my CD-ROM as drive D. How can I re-arrange this?

Well, as long as you have not installed anything on the current drive C, then you can change the secondary master and CD-ROM.
You can't change the drive that XP is installed on, 'cause that would break everything! So, XP on your primary drive will have to stay on E:
Right-click on My Computer -> Manage.
Click on Disk Management, and in the right pane you will see each drive listed.
Right-click on the drive description box next to the bar graph in the right pane -> Change Drive Letter and Path option.
Click the Edit button.
Select the drive letter you want, and click OK.

hope this helps

The Default drive assignment is:
Primary master, primary partition: drive C:
Primary slave primary partition: Drive
Secondary master, primary partition: drive E:

Logical drives in primary master drive in order
Logical drives in primary slave in order

Removeable drives in connection order.

That said, you can reassign all but your OS partition easily from within XP. (re-assigning the OS partition may cause XP to not boot)

Go to administrative tools, computer management, drive manager.
Right click on each drive, and you can change it's letter to any unused drive letter.
Note: these drive assignments will only be valid in XP. If you doot from a DOS disk, or an older version of Windows, the default assigments will hold.
