Win XP loses connectivity to the network

By sdurcan ·
Windows XP intermittently looses it's connection to the local network and requires a reboot. It can happen at any time whether it's in use or not. Any ideas?

put on latest service pack and critical updates. scan for viruses with up to date definitons. keep log of failures. did this ever work? what changed? try a new nic. try a new patch cable. laptop? wireless?

Have tried all of that! It's a relatively new PC! I've seen it happen before with switches and replacing it with a hub fixed it that time!! However, by the same token, I had to replace a hub with a switch to get XP PC's onto the network.

Have you tried ipconfig /flushdns
I have had several XP boxes that have rougue DNS and it causes a slow logon or failed logon.

Hello;

Make sure under the nic card advanced setting, you do not have the check box enabled for the XP operating system to manage the power management of the nic card. ie: XP cannot shut off the nic card if it wants to. You have to dig a bit to find this. See if this check box is checked and then uncheck it, then watch to see if there is any difference with the symptom you describe.

Good luck.

Thank you for your assistance. My friend eventually found the setting and it seems to have worked.
