Win XP non winmodem buy recommendation

By sgt_shultz ·
Hi, i want to test replace an older internal USR V.92 Fax Winmodem that a WinXP SP-1 user is complaining about disconnects with. gets them every minute or so. another consultant supposedly has gone over ISP settings with fine tooth comb. Speed set at 56K. the phone line has been replaced and works fine on other pc with different modem. No model number on the current winmodem is available to me right now. I am going to customers with several external USR modems: 33.6 Faxmodem, 56k Faxmodem and Courier to try. I am checking the HCL for them right now, www.usr.com says they are compatible...
My question: if I confirm the existing modem is the problem, what do you like for internal, non-winmodems for Windows XP? Thanks in advance.

Win XP non winmodem buy recommendation

Actually, I am moving a step back, to external serial modems.

1. When the phone line takes a lightning strike, only the modem goes, and not the PC.

2. You know for certain it is a true hardware modem.

As I am sure you have seen, the fieldof 'true' hardware internal modems is sparse.

For most systems, when I use an internal modem, I use the Intel / Ambient H.A.M. modem.
They are a 'partial' win-modem.
They have a bit more hardware than most controller-less modems, and thus placeless load on the system.

I have run across a few motherboards that just will not work with this modem though.

For a full hardware modem, I would likely compare USR and Zoom, (who else is left?) and go with the better deal of the 2.

Thank you Chas, this helped a lot. While awaiting your answer, I stuck an older 33.6 Courier v.everything external on there and it did cure the disconnects! tho it was not on the XP HCL. sheesh. only winmodems are on that list i think...Glad to knowwhat i thought i was seeing was accurate: it is strangely hard to find a non-winmodem. good point about lightning, which i will definitely use when discussing this with customer, altho my policy is to get and use the phone line protection that comeswith lightning rated surge suppressor or better yet, UPS. have seen *tons* of lighting wrecked modems here in the mountains of NM and occasional complete box wrecked so your words to the wise are sufficient...muchas gracias
