Win2000 selection still on at bootup

By loukota ·
I have Win98 on a drive that I used as a slave with Win2000 on the master for a dual boot system. When I tried using the W98 drive as a single the dual selection (win2000 or Win9 still comes up at bootup. How can I remove the reference to Win2000 (boot.ini,msdos.sys or some other .ini or .sys file perhaps)? The drive will still boot to Win98, if I select it before it times out, with no problem.

That did not help. I tried fdisk /mbr and that didn't work either. Anyother suggestions?

Do a sys c: at any dos prompt should take care of this for you.

Insert the Win 98 bootdisk and manually delete the boot files
The files that Windows uses are
Boot.ini,bootsect.dos,ntldr,ntdetect.com,and ntbootdd.sys (all files may not be present)
These are hidden files and you may nees to use the ATTRIB programme on the bootdisk and make them visible ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\*.*
I am thinking that the SYS C: will not work if you donot have both the drives connected and drive is not formatted in NTFS.

I could not boot up after deleting the ntldr file so I just reinstalled Win98 and that took care of my problem. Thanks anyhow. The experience was useful, frustrating, but useful. Did not lose anything.
