    Win2K won’t install NIC

    Locked

    by dkiffer ·

In a clean partition dual-boot setup, my install of Win2K from the CD went fine, but it won’t install drivers for my 3Com Office Connect TX NIC and it won’t accept the 3Com drivers on floppy. I swapped in a Linksys NIC with same results. How do I 1) find drivers for these NICs Win2K will swallow; 2)find NICs that 2K likes? Hard to get to my LAN without a NIC…Thanks

Question, are you migrating from Win95/98 to NT 4/5?

You mentioned, you did a clean install for a dual boot setup. Did you make two partitions one of which is the Win95/98 partition being 16bit/32bit file system, then loaded W2k on top of the same win partition as 32bit or ntfs system?

You may find that after installing a clean partition of Win 95/98 first, then a separate partition for NT5 as NTFS system, that your 2000 system can actually access your win95/98 partition as well.

Point to remember, when installing the nic’s for 95/98 be sure they work first, take note of the drivers used to make the network function correctly.

Now, migrating to the NTFS system, it won’t use the same drivers’ as the win95/98 drivers. Different filesystems.

Install NT drivers from the folders they are located in on your floppy install disks.

You then check your network neighborhood and check to see if your network has a red x on the icon, if so, it’s not functioning properly, if the x is gone, your’e u

It is a problem with W2K, you can try to remove your NIC, and do a clean install. After you’ve installed W2K you can install your NIC. Than there should be no problem. It worked for me.

Thanks for the comments, Dean, problem doesn’t have anything to do with the file system, it’s driver issue. There are three different 3Com 905C cards and the drivers are different for the TX and the TXM cards. For Linksys, there are drivers for the v.1 card in Win2K and an available driver for v.3, but none for v.2, which of course is the card I was trying to install. I finally found a driver that works for the 3C905 TX-M NIC on a Microsoft site. I have found through experimentation that the Intel 10/100 Pro series works the best with Win2K and has the drivers imbedded, installs with no hysteria. Thanks for the comments, Best, Dave
