Win95 network problem

By iversn ·
I have a 2 win98 computers and one win95 computer networked with cat5, 3 com pci nic's in each computer,3 com hub. The win98 computers see each other just fine, but the win95 computer only sees itself - not the other 2. I have all 3 computers setup to share their hard drives and printers. I have checked settings, workgroup name -I'm going crazy - any help? last night I downloaded the newest upgrade for win95 and installed it on the win95 computer. Sharon

I hate to even say it, but did you double check everything? All settings, Card work? Etc. It really is easy to forget one thing. Any chenc eof insatlling 98 on the 95? Make sure the cable is working. Try reinstalling components, protocol, file sharing, workgroup name. Hope thats helps.

You may want to make sure you have NetBEUI installed on all 3 machines. With a small net of Win9X machines such as yours, it will definately help. Can you do a find on the computer name? Browsing on Win9X machines stinks at times so they may not always report everybody on the network even though they are there.
One last thing may be to install TCP/IP on all 3, put them all on the same subnet, and put their names and ip addresses in the c:\windows\HOSTS file. There is a HOSTS.sam file you can copy to HOSTS and add your mappings there.
Hope this helps!

I have never been able to network a 95 and 98 machine without NetBEUI installed on both machines. I also find that it is a good idea to specify your own ip addresses in the TCP/IP settings for your ethernet adapter. For example 192.168.1.1 for onecomputer and 192.168.1.2 for the next, and so on.

Make sure that your subnet mask is correct also.
I had the same problem recently, and it turned out to be an out of date 3Com driver.Hit the website to get the latest.

Hi,
These are all godd answers. If you get this far then they didn't fix your problem. Make sure the group name is the same on all computers. Also make sure there are no leading or trailing blank spaces in the group or computer name. Try making thecomputer name something simple like one, two
etc. Make the group name the same on all machines and keep it simple and short.

Good luck,
Bo
