win95 Shutdown Issue

By bpsaltry ·
Can anyone suggest a cause for a Win95 system to restart instead of shutdown after issuing the Shut Down the Computer command?

Thanks.

We really need more information about your system and how it is configured to better understand and answer what is happening exactly.
However, I have seen this happen and it seems to normally be associated with a device installed in your system (like a network card), anti-virus software, or network software.
Microsoft has this article that discusses one reason why this could happen:

support.microsoft.com - search for the article Article ID: Q132776

I have run into this problem as well however on win2000pro (it ended up being a McAfee VirusScan issue). For win95 I would try to start in safe mode (hold shift while starting) and then try a shutdown once the has been running for about a minute. This will help you determine if is is a program being loaded at startup. If the system starts up and shuts down fine in safemode, you will have to start picking out the files that are be loaded during startup.

Just suggestions. Good luck!

Starting in safe mode and shutting down revealed a problem with files loading at normal startup. I ended Virus Scan, but this did not correct problem. I then ran an update to Virus Scan. On the subsequent re-boot, the system dropped into Scandisk, and following that, the problem disappeared. It appears to have been some unresolved install issue. Thanks for the help.

Win 98 is notorious for shutdown problems. If you changed a setting in MSCONFIG relating to fast shutdown it likely caused the problem. This was one of the first suggestions people would prove when you first experienced shutdown problems. If you changed this setting restore it and then download the latest shutdown patch from AutoUpdate web site.

This latest patch works for us. Unfortunately, shutdown problems arrise again after about 2-3 weeks at which time the patch has to be run again. I just put a shortcut on my users desktop to the patch so that they could run it whenever their computers stop shutting down correctly.
