I’m sorry to report this but the Win98 startup disk doesn’t leave much room for anything let alone a network client. I would recommend creating a seperate diskette with the DOS client for NetWare or NT depending on what you are connecting to. Bootfrom the 98 startup disk, then insert the network client diskette and connecting that way.
Hope this helps

You can either put the network drivers on a second disk and run a batch file to load them or create a seperate folder on your hard disk and load them from there.

Windows 98 startup disk has limitations and one of them is that it cannot provide access a network connection.

You might be able to add the drivers to the edb.cab file (on the startup disk). It is a compressed file for the dos ‘tools’. You can access it with winzip 7.x and above or other archive managers to add your net files. This will help keep the file space requirement to a minimum. Then you can edit the autoexec.bat file on the startup disk and add any statements you need after the :quit label and edit the config.sys to add statements after the [common] label.
I haven’t tried it myself but itmay be a feesible option if the compressed drivers will fit. Also if you’re using the net, you probably don’t need the cd drivers in the cab file. *Make sure to edit config.sys and autoexec.bat to remove cd statements if removing the drivers from the cab file.

I make the assumption that you only require a boot disk as opposed to a full setup disk.
Create a new 98 boot Disk eg (format /s)
copy the device drivers required to it and create config.sys / autoexec.bat files as necessary. Load the devices inconfig with any io / irq addresses applicable. You now have a 98 boot disk with dos prompt network
