Win98 freezes on home network if all oth

By goatts ·
I have a home network with 4 pc's sharing one cable connection using ICS/Win98. One pc is setup as the gateway with internal and external NIC's. If I turn on the gateway pc with all the others turned off then it will hang every 10 seconds or so (it's apparently looking for the computers). If I turn on one of the other pc's then the hanging stops. I need a simple/quick fix so I can run the gateway by itself with the others turned off. I've tried disabling ICS but it doesn't work. I only have loaded the protocols that I need.

Local network PCs should have stadic IP addresses. The gateway PC should have a stadic IP on your local network and on the cable network what every they are giving you (stadic or DHCP) The local pc needs there gateway set to the gateway pc local network.

Gateway PC inside NIC#1 125.0.0.1
Gateway PC cable modem NIC #2(xxx.x.x.x)
PC#1 IP 125.0.0.2 gateway 125.0.0.1
PC#2 IP 125.0.0.3 gateway 125.0.0.1
submask 255.255.255.0

If you want a quick fix, then I would create 2 hardware profiles. One that loads the internal NIC and its drivers and a second profile that does not load it. Upon bootup, you will be asked which profile to load. If you want to run the gateway PC by itself, choose the profile that will not load the internal NIC. You will still be able to access the internet via the NIC that is connected to the cable modem. However, you will be required to reboot the machine and choose the other profile before any of the other computers on your LAN will be able to share the Internet connection.

This seemed to work at first but then I had problems. Sometimes it will not even boot with the other computers off. Disabling the internal adaptor works once I get in. Thanks

Try this: Go to Control Panel/Network/Configuration/File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks/Properties. Set Browse Master to DISABLED and LM Announce to NO.

Along with what his is saying in answer 2, if the internal Network Card does not have an entered IP address under TCP/IP-->Nic in Network Properties, it will ping the cable looking for a Dynamic Host Server to give it one. So, set all you computers with static IP addresses. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Just change the last number for each one. And use the same subnet mask and make sure they all have the same group name under Identification.
