Win98 lockup after Internet session

By cricket4b ·
Running Win98 on Gateway laptop. Every time the user disconnects from an internet session the laptop freezes and must be rebooted. Running IE 5.0. User has a modem and network card installed. Using modem to connect to internet. Any suggestions?

Win98 lockup after Internet session

First try upgrading the browser to IE5.5 with SP2 then see what happens. Also try disabling everything running in the background except explorer and systray and then try to connect and see what happens when you disconnect.

There are a couple of possiblities

1. The modem is on a conflicting IRQ - make sure the modem is operating on com 2 or 4, strange but it does matter.

2. Memory management problem - run msconfig and uncheck any entires under the startup tab that are not required. (reboot to test settings)

3. Swap file corrupted - right click my computer and click properties go into the performance tab and change the virtual memory settings make the swap file min to 1.5x the RAM in the computer.

4. check the network settings, right click network neighborhood and verify the network settings, anything in here that is not necessary remove. Last resort remove and reinstall the dialup adapter and TCP/IP for the dial up adapter.

5. video drivers not functioning correctly (sometimes a problem), download and install a fresh copy of the drivers.

6. When was the last scandisk and defrag? (silly question but it sometimes matters)
Do this anyways its preventive maintenance.

There are more fixes let me know if these work.

Your network card and modem is conflicting, this is common in laptop setups. You need to disable the network card in the hardware profile for your modem session. You can create two hardware profiles, one that uses the modem and another that uses thenetwork card.
double click system icon in control panel, click hardware profiles tab, highlight original profile, click copy button under that screen (one of three buttons) type in a name such as Modem Session if you are disabling the nic in this profile, click ok then restart the computer. Select the profile you just named Modem Session or whatever go to device manager tab click plus sign next to network adapters then right click the NIC icon and select properties in the device usage area of the properties sheet clear the checkbox to disable the nic for that profile. Do the same precedure as above, for your nic by creating a profile that disables the modem when you go on a network.
This will do it. I have seen this one many times before, this is one of the reasons for hardware profiles! I am giving directions about the screen clicks from memory, this library computer locks me out of reviewing the system applet so I hope everything I direct you to is accurate. It should be very close anyway so you can figure the rest.

Hi, in my answer to your problem I asked you to " right click the NIC icon and select properties"... sorry being a frequent NT 4 user I forgot that feature will not work with win98 in this case. Instead double the Icon! Then go from there.

Tried a couple of other things, like assigning more than one workgroup. After working a short while (days), it still seized up. Your suggestion is the next I will try. The other two suggestions were simple maintenance that is currently being done onthis laptop. Thanks for your answer.
