WIN98 SE fails to display "shut down" sc

By skirat ·
After installing WIN98 over older version of 95, the shutdown session completes all steps except the last display ("OK to shut down").
The screen "Windows is shutting down" remains displayed. I can power off clean and scan disk doesn't run when I power up and load windows. Is this "problem" worth diagnosing?
Thanks

Lets put it this way: You know your system is having issues. How important any data you might have on the system is will determine the answer. But why not fix it while you can?

I would perform a DELTREE in the C:\Windows directory, after makinga boot disk with CDRom drivers installed and reinstall win98 cleanly.

As long as your data is NOT in the Windows directory it will still be instact. All you will have to do is reinstall win98, and all applications, and you are good to go.

Please see Microsoft's Knowledge Base article Q238096. It specifically address shutdown issues in Win98 SE. Good luck.

Microsoft does realize that this is a bug in there system and have created a fix for it in the service packs on windows updates. try that before you start killing all you directories.
