Win98SE hangs at shutdown

By shepler ·
I reformatted a hard drive, loaded Win '98 SE as a new OS install. I installed MS Office 2000, attached the machine to the Novell Network, upgraded to IE 6.0 and Outlook Express 6.0. The machine worked great. The user asked for two modifications. The first was to add "autosave" to Excel 2000. I did that. The second was to re-enable her "quick" keys on her Microsoft Internet Keyboard. I downloaded the IntelliType Pro keyboard software v. 2.11 from MS's website and installed it. The computer now hangs at shutdown on the "Win '98 is now shutting down" screen. The machine is a Dell V333c. Is there a conflict with the IntelliType software or AutoSave function and Win '98SE?

Greetings,

Windows 98SE has caused numerous problems in system shutdowns. There is a patch to fix the problem. Cut and paste this link into your browser (REMOVING SPACES if they appear after pastining). You'll get info and links to the patch.

By the way, Microsoft says the following:

The Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement addresses shutdown issues on systems with specific hardware/software configurations running Windows 98 Second Edition. These issues include systems restarting when selecting shutdown and systems hanging on shutdown.

Here's a dirict link to the Microsoft resolution page. (Don't forget those PESKY SPACES in the pasted URL.):

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp

Microsoft recommends the troubleshooting steps outlined in the KB article:

"Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition"

Good luck,

Windows 98 seems to do that on shutdown after installing some drivers. One of the procedures that windows performs on shutdown is to transition protected mode drivers to real mode. I would venture to guess that you might not have the exact correctdriver for the new keyboard. I would start there.

Here is two articles from M$ to help troubleshoot this for you. Also I would try the patch that this second link points too.
