WINAT to backup Exchange server 5.5

By cuss ·
I am running two NT 4 SP4 servers. One PDC and one BDC. On the PDC I have a 12/24 Gb tape backup. On the BDC I’m running Exchange server 5.5 SP2. Running Ntbackup from the PDC can backup IS and DS on the BDC no problem. Using the AT command ntbackup backup is \\bdc /t copy… from the PDC, again no problem. But trying to use WINAT to schedule a backup of the same command I get the following event id:

8000
Begin Backup of 'RAILTECH\RAILTECH01\EXCHANGE\Information Store' Verify: Off Mode: Append Type: Copy

8010
Microsoft Exchange services returned 'Access is denied.
' from a call to 'BackupPrepare()' additional data 'EXCHANGE'

8001
End Backup of 'RAILTECH\RAILTECH01\EXCHANGE\Information Store' Verify: Off Mode: Append Type: Copy

P.S. Please don't suggest using a third party backup program. After paying $600.00 for a copy of Archserve 6.5 single server edition, I could not get it to work more than five days at a time, and that was before we got our second server. The support

I may be wrong, but I'd think these errors are occuring because of the fact the NTBackup is not an "exchange-aware" backup program.

Mybe this works :-)

Create a batchfile which stopps the exchange services. Run backup. Start services again (through an other batchfile).

at 20:00 stopp exchange services
at 20:10 ntbackup server
at 22:00 start exchange services.

I'd be tempted to move the tape drive to your BDC and handle your backups from there using the "Exchange aware" version of ntbackup. I'd also check that the Schedule Service is using an account which has privs to backup the Exchange Server. I use one which has Site Server Admin Privs, and I don't get a problem. Conversely, when I was using the default, I got all sorts of grief. You might want to try the second of these ideas first.
