wincore.exe

By Scott L ·
I am getting random error messages from windows 98, that reference a file called wincore.exe. Microsoft Technet has nothing about this, instead there are references to wincore.cpp which is a C++ issue. The error states that there has been a Fatal OE error, and another states An Illegal Operation with Kernal32, and another states that a required dll is not found. Again, all of these messages are random, and never happen at the same time. Does anyone know what the heck this file is or who I can contact to resolve this issue?

It's a Visual C file. I can't be more specific...sorry.

Have you ever had Visual C installed or Visual Studio?? With those errors it looks like a folder has been deleted rather than uninstalled.

I am aware of the Visual C problems. I mentioned that in the original question. Visual c or c++ has never been installed.

Alrighty then....what were you attempting to do or doing when the error occurred?

It is random, as in the original message. Surfing the net, shutting down, opening a program, just sitting idle, completely random. It is never the same.

You may have a trojan horse. Look for wincore in the following key in your registry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If it is there, what shall I do? Delete it, or look into my virus definition files. I am not at the location of the machine, that is why I ask.

symantec just says to delete the file and the reg entry. Didn't really find much out about it. CA and Norton were the only two I found that even knew of it's existance.
