    wincore.exe

I am getting random error messages from windows 98, that reference a file called wincore.exe. Microsoft Technet has nothing about this, instead there are references to wincore.cpp which is a C++ issue. The error states that there has been a Fatal OE error, and another states An Illegal Operation with Kernal32, and another states that a required dll is not found. Again, all of these messages are random, and never happen at the same time. Does anyone know what the heck this file is or who I can contact to resolve this issue?

Have you ever had Visual C installed or Visual Studio?? With those errors it looks like a folder has been deleted rather than uninstalled.

I am aware of the Visual C problems. I mentioned that in the original question. Visual c or c++ has never been installed.

It is random, as in the original message. Surfing the net, shutting down, opening a program, just sitting idle, completely random. It is never the same.

You may have a trojan horse. Look for wincore in the following key in your registry:
      HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If it is there, what shall I do? Delete it, or look into my virus definition files. I am not at the location of the machine, that is why I ask.

symantec just says to delete the file and the reg entry. Didn’t really find much out about it. CA and Norton were the only two I found that even knew of it’s existance.

Okay…first though your original message says everything in your mind, it says very little in the mind of this man who has more than 17 years of experience in the field. There isn’t a whole lot of info to go on. I’m doing my best here. Second, I’ve found some information relating to wincore….if you are using apps that used to be on NT 3.51 and are using them on NT4 the way the combo boxes are drawn is the problem…the 3.51 code doesn’t function the same on NT4…hence the errors. This may not be your exact problem but I’ll keep working until I get it if it isn’t. Let me know.

It is WIN98, not NT. The info that you found is more than likely the same info that I have found. It references wincore.CPP and Visual C, Visual Studio, and C++. It also is directly related to WIN NT 3, 4. I want to know what the wincore.exe file is. The manufacturer, is it a virus, is it even relavant to the OS, is it referenced and if so, which DLL’s is calling it etc… The “wincore.exe” file, this is the file that is not returning any hits on any of the Tech sites that I am a member of,including TechNet. By the way, I am running on 14 years of exp., and my fifth Certification.

I assume you did a file search for this wincore.exe file. Right click it and go to properties and see what it tells you about the manufacturer and version etc.

Try running Dr. Watson and see if it will at least tell you what program is calling wincore.exe

For diagnostic purposes I would unload everthing I could from Startup etc. Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and Run Services and unload all unnecessary loads. Run Services is one place viruses love to launch from as they do not show up in task manager as a service. Be sure to back up your registry first.
