windows 2000 server administator login

By epg44 ·
Can anyone describe how I can obtain an unattended administator login if the server has to reboot. My server must start as an unattened server and begin operation without intervention for anyone. Can the admin. login screen be bypassed or do I have to add some type of login script to accomplish this action.

I don't know of anyway. But why would you want to do that?
If it is because you have to run a program? use servany.exe from the resource kit.

What you need is automatic logon software....

Windows Resource Kit has this and there are third party utilities that do the same.

Basically, you setup autologon and then have the applications you need to start run as a service (servany.exe) or have them reside in your startup folder on the server.

A lot of Companies who run webservers (especially at server farms) have failsafes so that when/if the application detects a crash, it automatically goes into a shutdown and reboot process.

You can find a simple auto logon utility here
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtml
However it would be extremely poor security practice to use on a server. Why don't you provide more detail of what you are trying to achieve

Yeah, you can manually modify the Registry to perform an auto-logon, but why when there are a lot of tools out there that will do this for you??

Personally, I recommend TweakUI from Microsoft to do this. Go here and get it:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
(please remove any spaces)

Double-click it to extract the 4 files. Then, go to where you had it extract the files, right-click on the INF file and choose Install.

Then go to the Control Panel, double-click on the new applet TweakUI, click the Logon tab, and enter in the logon name and password you want the server to auto-login as.

Now, I also have reservations about auto-logins from a security nature, but sometimes you gotta do this!

hope this helps

You can configure this using the registry, edit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Set the DefaultDomainName, DefaultPassword (must be non-blank), and DefaultUserName. Set AutoAdminLogon to 1 (all are type REG_SZ). If you ever want to logon as a different user, hold down the shift key as you logoff. Your password is stored in plain text in the registry and can be seen by someone with the authority to view a remote registry.
