Windows 95 very slow

By abcs ·
I have a client that I installed an HP External 5 Gig tape backup system on a Compaq Deskpro machine. I then did a full backup with no problems. Backup finished and I ask the client to click on the icon to bring up the backup screen and for some reason the icon would not run. The system no runs very very slow. If you click on the start option it may take 1 minute to bring up the start options and another 1 minute to get to programs.
If I boot up in Safe Mode it runs normally with good speed. I have removed all of the HP Colorado backup files and disconnected the unit. It appears that some .dll has become corrupted.
Any ideas will be sincerely appreciated.
TIA
Robert Payne

Is this machine on a network with shortcut icons that point to network based programs? If it is, the connection to the program resource may not be available to the machine. If's that's the case, the computer will sit there and search forever trying to resolve the network program resource.
If you're getting .dll errors. Extract those *.dll files from the Windows 95 CD and place them in the Windows\System folder. That'll have to be done from a boot disk or DOS prompt.

When you say, "removed all the files" do you mean you just deleted them without running the uninstall program for the Colorado software? If so, you may need to boot in Safe Mode and then go in through Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and look for the installed Colorado software. Highlight it and then click the add/remove tab at lower right and continue the uninstall process. This should rid you of the problem.

start a defrag.. also download regclean from download.com

then i would install tweakui from microsoft website, this will untinstall and rmeove old dll's.. make sure u did a complete removal of the software.. then try to re-install... disable anyanti-virus software as it may slow down the backup program.. somewhow files may have been corrupted....

good luck

The fact that a machine boots into safe mode and 'runs normally with good speed' is a HUGE HINT that you have a driver problem. Is it possible that the drivers that your client installed might work only with a newer OS? WIN95 is getting long teeth.

HP's knowledge entries indicate that having Colorado backup and Microsoft backup installed at the same time is a bad thing. (They don't say WHY, they just say it's a bad thing.)

I'd enter Windows Setup -> Disk Tools -> Details and see if the Backup component of windows was installed. If it was, then I would remove it and re-install the HP tape backup complete with the Colorado backup software.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!
