Hi, there are many answers, reloading windows (with or without a deltree) is one of the most extreme. Changing msdos.sys to stop fast shut down. One of the easiest, check for memory resident programs (ctrl+alt+del) other than systray and explorer. Old Laser Printer drivers and system enhancement and monitoring being likely culprits. Above all having a strategy of ghosting a hard drive in optimal condition and backing up all data. If this or any other even problem occurs, pull out the cd and restore, back up and perfect within 30minuates. DSR dsr100@bigfoot.com

I agree with tmr@visto.com that there are many reasons why window 98 cannot shutdown, but I think most likely is you need to disable fast shutdown. You can click run, type Msconfig, click advanced and select disable fast shutdown.. For details, visit windows help, then troubleshooting. There are five or six alternate options that you can check.

Another problem if you are running a Virus Scan and the scan is set to scan “A” drive on shut down this could hang Win 98. I have also seen this with Win 95.

There are actually a number of things that Microsoft recommends for resolving this problem.
1. If you are running McAfee VirusScan 4.x+ it is necessary that you disable the VirusScan scheduler.
2. Your motherboard may not support PCI IRQ steering. Check with the motherboard manufacturer and if it is not compliant open up device manager and uncheck the box to use IRQ Steering in the PCI Bridge device.
3. You may have a video card that requires a real mode IRQ assigned. Check with the card manufacturer to verify if it is required and if so set the BIOS to assign an IRQ to the VGA card.
4. It is possible that the BIOS on the motherboard you are using is not fully compatible with Windows 98. Restart the computer in “Safe Mode Command Prompt Only” and rename the file BIOS.VXD in \Windows\system to BIOS.OLD, restart the computer and attempt a shutdown. If this resolves the problem contact the Motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update.
5. There is an update that addresses shutdown issues

Try deactivating active desktop if it is running as this is known for causing windows to hang on shutdown.

Man visit the winodws update site an there you will find out patch for shutdown issue in Win98. All you have to do is to click Windows Update icon in the start Menu…the download file is about 160K.

I had same problem before, try the Shutdown troubleshooter in Start –> Help. With my computer, i had to disable quick shutdown in msconfig. In Start –> Run type msconfig. In the frist tab, disable that quick shutdown or something like that. Click on OK then reboot the sys.

i agree with answer 1… tis the quick fix. and all the rest just take too much time. The patch has worked on the last 5 computers i have used it on. if it works … why look for other alt…
Thanks Matt-
