Windows 98 Installation VMM32.VXD Error

By cassie ·
A friend has a Compaq Presario 2286 which was very clogged with proprietary preloaded software and was taking 5 minutes to boot. I reformatted the hard drive and tried to load a clean OEM version of Win98. After the hardware detection phase of the intall, the pc rebooted but could not continue because of the following error message: "VMM32.VXD Missing/Unable to load." I could get the pc to boot into safe-mode and verified that the file was intalled on the hard drive. I tried to load windows 3 times before I finally gave up. I've tried disabled the caching in the bios (cpu, video)as well as the virus detection. I also removed the modem, and disabled the onboard sound. The only component left was the onboard video which uses shared memory. Ican successfully reload windows using the Compaq restore CD but this also intalls all of the other "crap" along with it which is what I wanted to avoid. Anyone know why this pc doesn't like the OEM Win98?

Be sure that BIOS settings are set up correctly. It may display such error if incorrect SDRAM timing & PCI bus timing & AGP bus timing or overclocked processor.

You might not have a Compaq specific problem but a Windows installation problem. First check to see if VMM32.VXD is on the hard drive, It should be in the C:\Windows\System folder. If it isn't there you can extract it from the Windows setup cab file. For Win98 its in WIN98_48.CAB; I'm not sure which cab file for Win98SE but it should be close by (ie WIN98_49.cab).

Some other driver might be conflicting with VMM32.vxd such as the Umax scanner's umaxis11.386 (see MS Knowledge Base Article Q191874). To find a driver that might be conflicting try the trouble shooting steps found in MS Knowledge Base Article Q188867.

If you look at JimBs answer, you will see that this .vxd error is in regards to a scanner. I would assume that you do not have a scanner or scanning software instlled on the computer since you didn't mention it. I would reboot into safe mode and run regedit. Do a search for VMM32.VXD and delete all instances of it. Then try rebooting windows in normal mode. I'd be willing to bet that it works just fine.

Cheers :)
