Windows 98 networking problems

By spinadt ·
I have a home network with two pcs running windows 98 se. One generic home built and the other an HP with various generic additions. Both intel celeron one 566 and the other 870.
I had them completely networked all drives hard, A drive and cd rom and cd burner plus printer and internet sharing. Everything was working like a charm until I uninstalled a whole lot of expired and useless downloaded games from one computer.
Now I am unable to view the network on network neighborhood on the computer that I did the uninstalling. But I can access the other computer via the find computer facility when right clicking the network neighborhood icon on the desktop. This doesn't work on the other computer but all computers show up there in network neighborhood although the other computer is not accessible. Internet sharing still works and so does multiplayer game playing and printing.
I have checked the cable and uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. I have uninstalled my aol software and reinstalled. you name it, I've probably tried it.
I think it might be a problem with the registry but I am not so experienced there and so am not sure how to tackle a problem in that area.
So, the only other option I think I have is to **** everything away and start again.
Unless someone has some other suggestions to save me the time and effort on that solution.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Diana

Before you **** your machines away have you tried a free product called Regclean? If you do a search on the internet there are a number of sites which will allow you to down load it. Hope this helps.

Didn't get a chance to see if it would work since the system bounced back on its own.

On the computer that is not accessable.

Go into Control Panel

Then the Neworking Icon

Write down the items you see in there.

Find the driver disk for the network board.
If you do not have one, then get on the net and download the driverfor it.

Now Remove all the items from networking.

Reboot the computer.

When the computer is rebooted, go back into the control panel and networking.

Add the the same items back in.

This will should fix the networking problem.

If you aren't ready to **** away your computer just yet then there are a number of settings to check. Uninstalling the game software could have changed your network settings. Go here and follow the instructions for setting up your home network (you'll pick up a few pointers while you're at it):

Interesting tutorial but my network was up and running with all file and print sharing in place as well as internet sharing. It just started behaving erratically without reason.

Thanks, VinnyD but I already did that.
But hey guess what everything popped back to normal.
I just downloaded some diagnostic software as suggested by cairney@bhd.com and the following morning when I booted them both up - everything was running like a charm again.
The only thing I can think could possibly have caused my problem might be that the computer was overheated - we had a few 45C days here (110F) and the air conditioning was killing itself.
I went out and bought a second fan forit so we'll see if that helps.
Thanks everyone for your help.
