Windows 98: problem installing programs

By brhm57 ·
I have installed a new hard drive in my computer. The computer identified the large drive fine. I was able to install Windows 98 second edition, and MS Office, Quicken, and other standard programs. I've tried to upgrade to I.E 5.5, and install other programs and the pc will not let me. The installs fail without errors, or appear to complete but after rebooting the programs will not run. What could cause this?

Windows 98: problem installing programs

Sometimes IE 5.5 Install is a little flaky. Try going through the Control-Panel - Add/Remove Programs and Reinstall and/or Repair IE 5.5. If you are still having issues, try to search for Windows Updates. Also if you are running any of the VIA chipsets, you NEED to make sure you are running the latest 4in1 drivers.

Good Luck!

I guess I was unclear on this, IE 5.5 is one of the programs with problems. I can't install any programs on this computer. I have tried your suggestion, as well as going into safe mode to try to install, none have worked.

Thanks for your help.

When you installed your drive, did you take some simple steps? Is it the only drive? Does your BIOS support the size/speed/etc? Did you need to run FDISK, if not, have you tried? What kind of partition has been set up? Did you have any issues installing Win98?

It is one of 2 drives, the primary being 10GB, and the second being 3GB. The primary drive is split into 2 5GB partitions, and the second drive is one 3GB partition. I upgraded the BIOS on the pc to support this drive, and as suggested by Western Digital and the pc manufacturer tech support, used the EZ Bios when installing the drive. I had no issues installing WIN 98 SE, or the other programs I originally installed (Office 97, AOL, Publisher 2000, etc). This just started out of the blue. Had a similar issue while building the pc, so I did run fdisk /mbr, and re-partitioned the drive to the above specs. This seemed to originally take care of it. I have also unplugged the second drive hoping that maybe there was an issue there. Short of rebuilding the pc, I think I've hit a brick wall.

Had a similar problem on ME and reformatted and re-loaded over a number of weeks. Do your programs halt during loading? Have you had any problems with loading new hardware? I found in the end that I ahd a problem with too many .inf files. Try windows explorer/search and look for OEM*.inf files with 0Kb, I had 24000 plus of these files which stopped me loading direct X 8a. deleted them and it fixed it for a while, suspect this is a "feature" of IE5.5 SP1, keep deleting files of this type, not had any problems since upgrading to IE6.0. Thanks for the tip. I had about 20000 of these files. Seemed to help for the time being.
