Windows 98 SE changing icons of files.

By chris ·
Does anyone know how to fix or the reason why Windows will change the file type icon to something different. When I use my computer, Windows will sometimes change the file icon to some other icon. The file will still be the right extension, but the icon associated with that file type will change to another type. Any ideas?

IS IT A PARTICULAR TYPE OF FILES OR ALL FILES. IF A PARTICULAR TYPE THEN IT MEANS YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM TO OPEN THE FILE SO YOU CAN SEE THE ICONS CHANGED. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU HAVE A PICTURE FILE YOU CAN USE PHOTO EDITOR, ANY GRAPHICS SOFTWARES WILL OPEN IT. ALSO YOU MIGHT HAVE A DEFAULT OPTION TOO. SO IF YOU HAVE MADE THAT AS A DEFAULT THEN NO NEED TO WORRY. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE DOUBTS LEMME KNOW. AND ALSO WHAT ARE THE FILES THAT CHANGE ?

Jlouis45, the files it will change are HTML files, text(.txt), .gif, .jpeg. When it does this it seams like if you have the system loaded down using a lot of resources, it will change the file icons. You may look at your files and they will have a picture that you have been working on as the icon or sometimes it will change the html icons to the notepad icon, Does that help any.

If you install any new programs it will over write the registry to say that the file belongs to a new program, and that means that the icon will change on the file type.

Hi Chris
Sounds like you've either been installing/uninstalling programs or two programs are arguing over the ownership of file types.
Some programs, when they load, including Internet explorer (which likes to own those particular file types) willpop up a message box asking if you want the program to be the default for a particular file type. If you say yes it will change the file type associations. Then you open the other program which will ask you exactly the same thing and change them back.
(You're not using IE and Netscape are you?)
I'm not sure about netscape but in IE click on Tools|Internet Options... and then the programs tab. If the check for default browser is on, turn it off and click Apply then OK
Hope this helps
John
