Windows 98 SE fails to network

I ran into a similar problem with Win98SE and 3Com NICs. At some point there was an issue with IRQ steering. This was supposed to be fixed in 98SE (however I never had the problem with that in Win98 [using the same hardware!]) Look in the Device manager >system devices >PCI Bus >IRQ Steering tab and take the check mark out of Use PCI Steering. You will have to reboot but this worked in my case and was the only reported case of this when I called Microsoft tech support. You may have to uninstallthe NIC and reinstall but this should help. The tech at Microsoft said that the BIOS would handle the IRQ Steering just fine Windows just likes to control the hardware through the OS as much as possible.

what protocols do you have installed on your Win98 box? you may want to try uninstalling them, reboot, reinstalling them, that fixes many many problems...
did you check through the reg. to make sure it's going out the right ports??

Good Luck,
