Windows 98SE freezing

By heyronie ·
I have windows 98SE and my systems keeps freezing. I haven't really noticed it while working in windows but I constantly freezes while on the internet. I just upgraded from a Pent II 350mhz to a Pent II 450mhz and put in a new hard drive. I haven't installed all of my windows programs yet so therefore I haven't really used my computer for anything but the internet. I tried to install the updates for my system but unable to because it freezes on me. I have a Lucent Win modem. It seems to freezemore while downloading. When it freezes Ctrl-alt-del does not respond. My daughter was my computer playing when of her CD games for over an hour and it did not freeze up. I just installed Microsoft office 97 with no problem. Any suggestions please.

Please help
Chris

Web signt address given was not found. There were no service packs for Win98SE. Also I mentioned I was having problems downloading so I probably could not dowload it anyway.

You did not say whether or not the computer
comes back after a while. Office 97 installs
a feature called fastfind. Check to see if
this is in your start up folder:
Start-Programs-Startup. If it is delete it.
This little goodie on a schedule will search
every drive in your computer. While it's
doing so it effectly locks up your com

I stated the only way to bring my computer back was to reset. Fastfind was not running on my system.

If the system didn't freeze up with the slower CPU, it could simply be the modems. Try this:
Start>settings>Control Panel --double click on the Modem Icon --selcet the Properties button --change the 'Maxium Speed' down one setting. Reboot the computer and try downloading something from the internet. If your still freezing up contact your internet provider; You may need to add some commands to the 'Advanced Connection Settings' to communicate better with the service provider's Server.

Also, with a newer chip (yes, only 100mhz faster, but still a possibility), you may be experiencing a situatio where the additional heat is just enough to make your system unstable. Especially if you have a high-end video card and/or few case fans. Some of the PII450's ran really hot. Check your case temp in the BIOS.

If that isn't it, I agree it may be the modem. An IRQ conflict or seriously corrupt driver will cause similar. Uninstall/reinstall it, or try moving it to a different slot.

My pwr supply fan is next to my CPU and blows on it and I also have a fan on my CPU. Temp. was 100. Can you provide more info about the modem part. I tried to change the resource for my modem but it would not let me.

You don't mention what browser you are using and the version. I assume you are not one of the two people using Netscape :)

In your browser try going to "Tools" "Gerneral" tab and "Temorary Internet Files" click on settings and increase the Cache file size using the slider.

good luck
